Fio Presents The Island

From time to time we host performances by touring companies at our Dance Centre in Llandrindod Wells and we are absolutely thrilled to welcome back the extremely dynamic Fio to Powys this Autumn for an evening performance of their much anticipated new show, 'The Island'

20th October 2018 | 7.30pm | The Dance Centre, Llandrindod Wells | Tickets £10/£8

The Island by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona

The Island is set on Robben Island, the notorious prison situated in the bay overlooking Cape Town, South Africa. Nelson Mandela’s enforced home for much of his captivity, Robben Island incarcerated many of the political prisoners who threatened apartheid rule. John and Winston are two such political prisoners, grinding through days of pointless, back-breaking labour, coping with vicious beatings from the guards, and spending their nights remembering a life outside of their current misery. The play is based on the true story of a performance in the prison by two inmates of the great classical drama of political protest, Antigone.

This soaring, award-winning drama draws on the stories that linger from the notorious prison on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.

Fio made their Llandrindod Wells debut in October 2017 when they performed their critically acclaimed adaptation of Katori Hall's 'the Mountaintop' to a delighted audience at the Dance Centre who experienced an honest and raw performance with humour and passion.
